Azerbaijan is bounded by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south.
The country is known to be among the most progressive and secular Islamic societies. Azerbaijan has an ancient and historic cultural heritage. Azerbaijan is a secular and a unitary republic. It is one of the six independent Turkic states as well as an active member of the Turkic Council and the TÜRKSOY community.
Azerbaijan has diplomatic relations with 158 countries and holds membership in 38 international organizations.
Rivers and lakes form the principal part of the water systems of Azerbaijan, they were formed over a long geological timeframe and changed significantly throughout that period. This is particularly evidenced by remnants of ancient rivers found throughout the country. The country's water systems are continually changing under the influence of natural forces and human introduced industrial activities.
There are 106 species of mammals, 97 species of fish, 363 species of birds, 10 species of amphibians and 52 species of reptiles which have been recorded and classified in Azerbaijan.
Two thirds of Azerbaijan is rich in oil and natural gas. Azerbaijan has the largest agricultural basin in the region. About 54,9 percent of Azerbaijan is agricultural lands.
Tourism is an important part of the economy of Azerbaijan. The country's large abundance of natural and cultural attractions make it an attractive destination of visitors.
